As a military family, we love to save money on vacation. We are no different than any other family out there trying to save money. I came to realize a long time ago that we are on a fixed income, but I still want to be able to give my family those awesome experiences. A few weeks ago I came across Armed Forces Vacation Club and loved how they are helping military families save money on vacation. So I thought I would share a few tips for how military families can save money on vacation.
Plan ahead
I think one of the best things you can do, as a military family, is to plan ahead. Sure, sometimes you have no choice, but planning ahead can help you save a ton of money on vacations. Taking our time and researching has proven time and time again that this is a great way to save money. Sometimes when you’re impulsive in planning and buying, it can backfire financially. Planning ahead has always helped us save money on vacation.
RV it up
This one is easy for us since we are a full time RVing family already. By using an RV, you can save so much money on a vacation. You don’t have to worry about lodging and you simply take your RV wherever you’re wanting to travel. Even if you don’t own an RV, you can easily rent one for fairly cheap. We have a big family and RVs sleep all 6 of us without trouble. Plus, you don’t have to keep packing and unpacking!
Research the free stuff
One of the best ways military families can save money on vacation is by researching the free stuff. When the average cost of a ticket can be anywhere from $15 to $25, it is well worth the money to search for the free stuff. You can even search for venues that will give you a discount for being a military family. I like giving my money to the companies that offer military families discounts!
Know how to look for the best lodging
Not everyone has the benefit of RVing, which is why it is important to look for the best deal in the lodging department. This is one that we have used in the past to help us, as a military family, get the best deal on lodging. It’s called AFVC (Armed Forced Vacation Club) and they even have a vacation planning resource center to help you make the most of every vacation. Armed Forces Vacation Club offers free membership for all active duty, guard, reserve and retired members of the armed forces as well as civilian employees of the DOD. AFVC even has a sister brand, called Veteran Holidays, which is dedicated to serving the veteran community!
Take advantage of freebies
Every place you go there are free things to do. Sometimes there are advertised, other times it takes a bit of research. Some of our favorites have been the 11 free things to do in Williamsburg VA, the 25 free things to do in Orlando Fl, and the 59 Free Things to do in Philadelphia PA.
I’d love to hear of ways in which you have saved money on vacations as a military family! What are some of your best tips?
