Before kids I was always changing up my hair. I would go from blond to brunette and back again, highlights, low lights and in between. Ok yeah I sang that a little bit but it's true. For a while I didn't know my true hair color. Then I had kids and didn't color my hair because they don't recommend you coloring your hair when pregnant.
Once I started coloring my hair again I realized something. Expert hair coloring is EXPENSIVE! So I started coloring at home. I want to share how you can have professional hair coloring at home!
How to Save Money When Coloring Your Hair
There are several ways to save money on your at home hair coloring other then couponing for your hair color, the biggest is root touch ups. Both of which I do recommend! Here is what I have found.
Condition, Condition, Condition – It's no secret that coloring can dry out your hair. Well conditioned hair will hold the color better and longer! You will get a the true color you are looking for. Ever wonder why the dye your hair at home boxes always give a conditioner for after your color? It's because it helps seal in the color longer.
Root Touch Up – Touching up your roots will help you go longer between hair coloring. Zotos Professional has a great root touch up spray that extends color. Check out this picture:
Avoid Hot Showers – The hot water will dry out your skin as well as your hair. When your hair dries out the color comes out of it.
Shampoo Less – Shampooing strips your hair from the natural oils that protect your hair and while the shampoo strips away dirt and grime from your hair it will strip away the color too. Skip washing your hair every day and move to every other day and use a dry shampoo in between, one made for colored hair.
Use Special Color Shampoo – When you do shampoo make sure to use a shampoo and conditioner that is specially made for colored hair.
Use a Shower Filter – A filter on our shower head to filter out the chemicals and chlorine in the water will help save your hair as well.
Follow these tips for a great at home color that you would swear was done by a professional and you will have to color less often saving your money!

I skip the expensive salon dye jobs that use toxic chemicals that cause cancer as well as destroy your hair. I use henna that leaves my hair healthy, soft and shiny as well as great color. It costs me about $15 to color my hair and I freeze the leftover to use to touch up my roots. I mix apple cider vinegar and coconut oil with the henna to get better color absorption and deep conditioning. I switched to a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner that doesn’t strip my color. I avoid using heat appliances on my hair as that dries my hair out and causes breakage. I have my guy trim my hair every 2-3 months at home, so I skip the damaging products they use on your hair. I also get a better haircut the way I want it, not the way some scissor happy stylist thought it should look. And I prefer the convenience of my free at home haircut.

You can also mix any leftover color with your conditioner for a quick refreshed look every time you wash it.
