The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System Snack
This was a super fun snack to put together for the kids, and is simple to put together using what you have on hand. Sliced cheeses became our Saturn- I used a cup to cut the circle, then used the outside part of that to cut out a ring with scissors. A Babybel was perfect for the red planet -Mars. Marshmallows were our stars or as my son pointed out they could be the Milky Way, while cereal were the asteroids hurtling through space. I let the mini rice cake be open to their interpretation- and was quickly declared as Venus. I love to include fresh fruit at every snack and meal- what could be more perfect than a Starfruit? And if your child has never tried it before its a great way to introduce a new food in a fun way. Finally I created Earth with a vanilla wafer swirled with frosting that I colored blue and red and swirled- it need not be perfect to be identifiable. After reading The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System my son had no problem identifying that he thought each food was, and both kids declared it “ The best snack ever!”
Be creative use what you have on hand to construct a Solar System themed snack, an orange slice for the sun, cheerios to represent Saturn's rings, popcorn for astroids, and maybe a swirl of yogurt for the Milky Way, a strawberry slice could be Mars. Use grapes, pepperoni, melon balls, blueberries, cheese, cookies, cereal, or crackers to set a fun out of this world scene.
If you have a little space fanatic on your hands consider picking up something like this food jar to make even home school lunch a fun occasion.
Want to incorporate some Astronaut food into your little ones study? These are great options to give them a taste of what they eat in space, you can pick them up fairly inexpensively ( Remember Amazon offers free shipping at $35.00)
I also highly suggest using our 100 page Solar System Printable with this unit.
