My family loves this slow cooker baked beans recipe. We were going through the big cans of baked beans 6 or more a week between side dishes and my husband favorite cowboy casserole. So I started to experiment on how to make my own and found a recipe I like.
I like to make my own BBQ beans instead of buying them for $3 or so a large can. I can make four meals worth of BBQ Beans for my family of 6 for around $6 That's a 50% savings Plus I can sneak in veggies and things my kids don't usually eat!
Slow Cooker Baked Beans Recipe
This recipe is so easy to customize, add some brown sugar or hot sauce. Peppers would go great in this recipe it too.
Ingredients
3 Lbs Dry Beans, type doesn't really matter but like Pinto and have used black beans.
1 Teaspoon Salt
1 Red Onion, I like to use Vandalia as well.
1 batch of my Homemade Hickory BBQ Sauce, I use one mason jar per batch of beans you can adjust based on how thick or think you like your sauce.
Directions
I make my BBQ Beans from dried beans. I make three one-pound bags in a large slow cooker. Cover the beans with water and cook on high for about 4 hours with a teaspoon of salt.
Once cooked drained the water and add one red onion chopped up (I chop mine kind of small to hide it from the kids)
Then I mix in a batch of my Homemade Hickory BBQ Sauce and mix to cover all beans. From here you can personalize it with brown sugar, and other flavors. Then cook for another hour to let all the flavors meld.
This makes about four meals worth for our family, so I let the beans cool down and then freeze the leftover in meal size portions.
