We love to dye eggs around here for Easter. It's simple, fun and, you can turn them into Deviled Eggs after the fact if you really want to. I just know your kids will love making these Galaxy Easter Eggs, as mine did.
How to make Galaxy Easter Eggs
You will want to use hard-boiled eggs for this activity. There are a few ways to do this. Boil them on the stove OR get all fancy and make Hard-boiled eggs in the Instant Pot. Instant pot is faster in my opinion.
Can I use the paint on warm hard-boiled eggs?
No, you’ll need to wait for the eggs to cool down before you get started. After you’ve boiled the eggs, allow them to soak in a bowl of cold water to cool down at a faster pace. Give it about an hour or so before attempting to add the paint to the shells to create that incredible galaxy-style appearance.

How many coats of black paint will I need to add to the eggs?
Before you can add your bright galaxy colors, be sure to add three layers of paint. You can start with the first layer, allowing it to dry for several minutes before applying the second layer. Follow the same process for the third layer until you’ve completely covered your egg with black paint. You should also let the black paint dry before you end up adding any of the other colors to it.
Do I have to wait for each color to dry to add more colors?
No, you won’t need to wait. While you’ll initially wait for the black to dry on the eggshell, you won’t have to wait after that. So, you can apply a bit of royal blue paint on the egg, followed by dabbing some of the teals on top of the royal blue while it’s still wet. You want to go in a step-by-step order until you’ve added all of the colors, saving the gold color for last as a highlight.

How long does it take for the eggs to dry?
It should take about an hour for your eggs to dry after you’ve applied the paint to them. If you want to play it safe, you can wait a bit longer before you begin adding the flicks of white paint to the eggs using a toothbrush.
How do I use the toothbrush to add white paint to the eggs?
Mix your white paint with a drop or two of water to make it more liquid and easier to work with. After you’ve combined the paint with a bit of water, dab your toothbrush into it and wave it around, allowing it to splatter on the eggs.

Will this get messy when applying the white paint?
It can get messy when you’re trying to add white paint to the eggs. However, the best way to combat the mess is to complete the process while using cardboard instead of having your eggs and paint on a clean surface, such as your kitchen table. If you use the cardboard, you can easily dispose of it when you’re done instead of having to worry about cleaning up so much paint left behind.
How long do the eggs need to dry after adding the white paint?
Once you’ve finished painting your eggs by adding that finishing touch with the white paint and toothbrush, you can let them sit and dry overnight. Be sure to avoid touching them until the next day to avoid messing up the incredible galaxy paint job that you’ve completed.
