Furniture is one of those things that you need in your house. You cannot necessarily go without for an extended period of time. Maybe you have old furniture or just want to buy new furniture for your house. Guess what? It’s possible, but you do need to save for it. I’m assuming you want to avoid credit card debt. Well, you can! Check out these ways to save money buying furniture.
#1. Set up a budget
The first step to buying anything is to actually set up a budget. This is where you decide if you’re buying something cheap or something expensive. It doesn’t matter what budget you choose, just make sure you can afford it. However, a budget is necessary, so you know how much money to save.
#2. Put furniture on lay away
I’ve always thought that layaway was kind of cool. It’s one way to buy furniture and save money at the same time. Oftentimes, when you use layaway, you can lock in a good deal. No reason to ever feel ashamed for paying cash for something, especially when using layaway.
#3. Buy second hand furniture
I know some of you may be cringing at the thought of this, but you shouldn’t. Second hand furniture is awesome if you can find the right furniture for your home. For example, looking in a Facebook garage sale, you may land some awesome furniture. You can even keep an ear open for close friends and family members that may be getting rid of their furniture.
#4. Upcycle used furniture
Maybe there is nothing wrong with your current furniture, it just needs a little TLC. If you’re feeling up for the task, you can actually upholster your own furniture. Doing this to your furniture can save TONS of money, it’s amazing.
#5. Buy a set of furniture
Another way you can save money buying furniture is by buying a set. Buying a set of furniture allows you to “buy in bulk.” You can get a couch, loveseat, and chair for under $500 sometimes. Depending on what kind of furniture you need, this could be a really good option for you.
#6. Hodge podge furniture together
Are you really on a budget? Hodge podging furniture together is what millions of Americans do. They may not have a set and their furniture might be from multiple places. That is okay! Your furniture doesn’t have to be perfect for you to be happy. Maybe Uncle John handed you down a couch and your friend Susie gave you a chair. This is awesome, kind, and something you can just roll with.
#7 Shop online for in-store pick up.
Ok, this one is a bit out there, but bear with me. Shopping sites like Walmart, Target, and even Ikea can be a hassle and many times the instore stock is SO little compared to online. But having furniture shipped will cost an arm and a leg. So shop online and having it delivared to the store for you to pick up! Sears is another good I like to look for furniture to pick up in store!
Buying furniture can be fun and exciting as long as you know how to save for it. What tips would you add?

I like your advice about buying furniture in a set. I didn’t realize that it could save you so much money. My wife and I are trying to furnish our new apartment, and we want to save as much money as possible. We will have to look into buying some sets of furniture.
