Anywhere from 4 to 5 will produce the same result.
I am diabetic so I can not use regular sugar. Can I use a substitute?
Absolutely. You can use stevia or monk fruit is good too. For stevia, a 1/2 teaspoon replaces a full cup of sugar in a recipe. For monk fruit, the ratio is 1:1.

I use 3 bags of Lipton family size iced tea bags in 4 cups water just off boil for 10 min, 2/3 cup sugar with 2/3 cup water to make simple syrup, fill 2qt pitcher halfway with ice, pour the hot tea and hot syrup over the ice and top off with cold water. The ice melts in a couple minutes and the tea is diluted to proper strength. Killer recipe!

I’m diabetic…so I sugar isn’t good although i love their Sweet tea!!! I love monk fruit % stevia sweetner but how much (packets) is good?
Thanks much!!!
Emily says
This might be a silly question, but as I’ve never made sweet tea before, you just use Lipton black tea? Looks amazing, can’t wait to try!
Danielle, The Frugal Navy Wife says
No silly questions! Yes, I use the black tea and the big family size bags when I make a big batch for the fridge.
Rhys says
Does this make a whole gallon?
Danielle, The Frugal Navy Wife says
Yes, I use a gallon-sized pitcher and even that doesn’t last long around my house!
Ashley says
If they don’t have the family size bags how many of the regular ones do you use?
MissTiffy says
4.
Cassie says
My question is the same as Ashley’s- if you don’t have family size bags how many?
Tiffany says
Ok..I’m a huge CFA tea fan. Like, I get one everyday. It’s my coffee (I don’t drink coffee). I’ve tried to make my own tea a million times and never get it right. Now that we may have to be on lockdown with this virus, I need to be able to make my own tea it CFA closes all the way. This recipe is so good!! I had another brand of tea bags and used a little less sugar. It tastes great! Thank you!!!
Danielle says
How many tea bags did you use? We are on lockdown and I’m with you, I need my sweet tea!
Julia says
Does this make 2qts or a gallon? Directions say pour in 2 qt pitcher and then in comments it’s stated it makes a gallon? Just a lil confused,, and in lockdown also, need my sweet tea LOL Thanks
Danielle, The Frugal Navy Wife says
When you are making the tea (letting it steep) you want to use the smaller 2 quart container because it will be concentrated. Once the tea has steeped (after the first 15 minutes) you will pour that into the gallon container and fill the rest of the way with water. I hope that helps it is a gallon of finished tea.
J says
How many small tea bags … I don’t have the family size
Wendy says
We tried making this but it just doesn’t taste quite right. The recipe calls for 2 Family Size Lipton Tea bags which we used. In the photos for the recipe it shows smaller bags and a lot more. Also, in one of the questions above you answered to someone else it says Lipton Black Tea but it doesn’t specify that on the ingredient list.
What is the exact type and size and quantity of tea bags that should be used?
Also, if I’m ready the other questions and comments correctly there is a step missing in the recipe where you need to transfer it to a gallon size container before adding the remaining water?
Please clarify.
Jenny O says
How many small tea bags do I use if I don’t have the Fam Size?
Tricia says
It looks like this question wasn’t answered but I counted 7 small bags on her photo and that’s what I normally use (I live in France and we can’t get the family bags).
Ali says
Hi! I doubled the recipe thinking it would make a gallon if I did it that way. Did I just make two gallons worth? Will this still be very concentrated? Thank you!
Stacy says
Stupid question here bc I’ve never made sweet tea before. Your ingredient list says 2 Lipton Family Size Tea Bags, but the photos show a lot of bags. So do you mean two boxes of bags? Not just two individual tea bags, correct?
Mckale says
I use the gallon size tea bags right? I’m really confused.
MissTiffy says
There are three sizes of teabags that i know of. Single-cup sized, family-sized bags (which as far as I have always heard/read make 1qt apiece), & gallon-sized bags. In this recipe, she says to use two family-sized bags.
Aly says
I thought this recipe was for a half gallon since it doesn’t say anywhere to switch to a gallon container. I split this recipe in half.
2 quart pitcher (same as half gallon)
2 cups of water
4 regular teabags (I googled it and it said it was 4 regular teabags for 1 family size)
6tbsp water and 6tbsp sugar for the simple syrup
Fill the 2 quart pitcher up with cold water
Ashley says
Thank you for breaking it down!
Arneice Moore says
Could you please explain what is simple syrup?? I have never heard of that ingredient. I need to know what to use. Thank you.
Arneice Moore.
Marissa says
Arneice,
Its a syrup you make yourself. (3/4 cup of water + 3/4 cup of sugar)
MissTiffy says
If you are making this recipe, I’d suggest tasting it when you get to half a gallon when adding your water. It tastes perfect to me at a half gallon. If i had added another half gallon of water like was said in most of the above comments, it would be extremely watered down and unsweetened. I believe that all of the comments saying this recipe makes a gallon is a typo/mistake. If made as written (2 quarts)… this tea tastes fantastic, and very similar to chickfila’s. I used Luzianne family-sized teabags because that is all I had in my freezer. Came out wonderful anyway. Thanks, Frugal Navy Wife. This recipe is fantastic as written!!!

Chick Filet uses Tetley tea, not Lipton. Just a clarification
Jinny says
I was nervous reading about the hot syrup, and ice. If the container is glass,
please be careful. I cracked a pitcher because the water was too hot and
the glass was not tempered.
Robyn Brown says
Lipton is just not that good as tea. I’d choose Luzianne over Lipton any day. Also Chick Fil A uses Tetley tea. I’d recommend one of those brands.
Marissa says
I love Luzianne as well!

Hello, Just stopping by to say thank you, this is delicious! I did a quick google on “copy cat Chic-Fil-a sweet tea” and your page came up on top. I am so excited to have a go-to recipe to make for sweet tea!!! Before finding you recipe I tried to wing it, but I never knew how much sugar to use and then it sank to the bottom because I didn’t do a simple syrup. This is huge for me, I feel like a new woman LOL Thank you so much! (Love, a Navy Sister, my brother was in for 3 years, now he’s in the Coast Guard)
